Hey there,

This is a brief description about WAI (Web Accessibility Initiative). After reading this, you will understand what WAI standards are and why they need to be applied on the web.

1- What is WAI?

WAI (created by W3C, in 1997) is a set of guidelines intended for web developers, authors, and designers- about how to make the web content accessible to people with disabilities.

The goal of the guidelines is accessibility. However, they also help make web contents available to more browsers (voice browsers, cell phones, hand-held devices), and to users working in difficult environments (hands-free, strong light, darkness, bad sight, heavy noise).

2- Why are WAI standards important?

Because extremely important to service the millions of people with disabilities who are online every day. Furthermore, there are millions of people using poor browser equipment or working under difficult user environments.

Below are additional reasons for making your site more accessible :

  • It will improve your reputation and image

  • It will improve your customer satisfaction

  • It will increase your number of visitors

  • It will increase the time your visitors spend on your site

  • It will increase the number of returning visitors

  • It will also make your site more usable for people without disabilities

  • It will make your site more usable for users with images turned off

  • It will make your site more usable for people with older equipment

  • It will let you make your site more usable for far-sighted users, a condition many people of age experience

So you .. yes you mr.developer, start dveloping websites that meet this standard, else you will be a sucking developer:p, just kidding of course, but really, always look forward, and as what apple's people 'think diffrent' :)
